Fall 2026
Updated October 14, 2026
Fall at The Hitt Family Farm has brought new piglets, some difficult lessons, and plenty of everyday work. Some projects are moving along, while others are waiting their turn. There are only two of us, and the animals don’t put their needs on hold while we finish something else.
Molly and the Piglets
Much of our attention right now is on Molly and her first litter. We have five piglets to watch grow, and we’re learning as we go about keeping them safe, meeting Molly’s feeding needs, and helping the little ones get started.
It has been exciting, tiring, and sometimes heartbreaking. We’ll share more of that experience in the Homestead Journal, including the parts that didn’t go as we hoped.
From the Garden to the Pantry
The summer garden is winding down, and there’s less coming in for supper. We’re using what we put away—dried tomatoes, herbs, okra, pickles, and other preserved food—and thinking about what we want to do differently next year.
Some crops earned their place again. Others left us with questions about varieties, growing conditions, or whether we simply waited too long to pick them. Those lessons will help shape the next garden.
Getting Ready for Colder Weather
As the weather changes, we’re looking at the animals’ shelters, our water arrangements, and the everyday jobs that become more difficult in the cold. We’re deciding what needs attention first and what can realistically wait.
The bigger plans are still there, including a separate farm kitchen with room for preserving and better storage. For now, we’re working through the smaller steps that keep the homestead moving.
Keeping a Record
We’re also gathering photographs and writing down the stories behind them. We want to remember when things happened, why we made certain decisions, and what we learned afterward.
The Homestead Journal will hold those stories. This page will change with the seasons as our work and priorities change.
We’re building a homestead, one season at a time—and some seasons have a lot to teach us.
