About The Hitt Family Farm

We’re Bill and Lynda. Since beginning our homestead journey after retirement from all of the other things that we have done, on our wooded Virginia property in September of 2024, we’ve been building The Hitt Family Farm one project and one season at a time.

Using what started with woods and not much more, plans that have grown and changed and morphed into things we never saw coming, and a lot of life experience that didn’t necessarily apply to homesteading, we have steadily created animal areas, gardens, a greenhouse, water systems, fencing, useful plants, and food preservation systems, while going about the everyday work of creating a more productive homestead.

We’ve also learned that building a homestead doesn’t mean doing everything the same way. Bill handles much of the outdoor work, including the gardens, animals, fencing, construction, and the day-to-day physical work around the property. Lynda handles much of the planning, research, kitchen work, food preservation, recordkeeping, website, and the systems that help turn what the farm produces into something we can use and preserve. When a project needs both of us, we work on it together.

The Hitt Family Farm website is where we plan to share what we’re doing from day to day and season to season. We’re going to show the good and the bad, what’s working and what we need to change, because we aren’t people who know everything. We’ll need to learn and grow as we go along. We probably won’t make progress as quickly as some other homesteaders, but whatever we do, we intend to share it with others so they can learn along with us.
